The Split Bridge
mountain ravine, site
The old bridge ends abruptly in open air, its far half long fallen into the ravine below. Someone has strung ropes and planks across the gap, and they creak and sway with every gust. Tar and pitch smell thick in the air from recent repairs, and far below in the ravine's shadow, something shifts that you can't quite make out.
Something large dens in the ravine floor rubble and reacts to prolonged noise or dropped debris from above.
Landmarks
The Rope Crossing. Improvised plank-and-rope bridge spanning the gap; requires a check to cross safely, especially in wind.
Repair Cache. Barrel of tar and spare rope stashed near the bridge's edge, replenished periodically by unknown hands.
Ravine Floor. Base of the ravine, visible from the bridge, littered with the original bridge's fallen stone and something large denning among it.
Distinguishing features
Bridge structurally collapsed, replaced with improvised rope crossing
Strong tar smell from ongoing patch repairs
Movement visible in the ravine shadow below, source unclear
Inhabitants
Local repair worker. gruff, appears occasionally to maintain the rope crossing, cagey about who ordered the repairs
Secret
The bridge was deliberately never rebuilt in full — full repair would open a faster route that a nearby settlement doesn't want used, for reasons tied to what dens below.
